I was tired of working an unstimulating job at a bank and was fortunate to discover my passion for programming. I was afraid that I was getting started after the age of 11 (so, starting "late" haha) but I've found that loving what I'm doing has really let me catch up quickly, it doesn't feel like work.
I think the time is now to get into programming if it was not what you studied in colleges, universities are behind, but they will start to catch up. If programming makes you happier than your day job, carpe diem :).
